Carry-On Pet - Cabin / Passenger Compartment

Hawaiian Airlines understands that your pet is an important part of your family and we strive to provide an enjoyable travel experience for the both of you. We offer travel options for domestic dogs, cats and household birds.

Carry-On Pet Reservations

Hawaiian Airlines will only transport domestic dogs or cats as pets in cabin. Household birds must be transported as Check-in luggage. Other animals are not permitted.

Pet reservations are accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Please call Reservations to check pet space availability and reserve space for your pet.

For transportation of pets where the pet and kennel weigh over 70 lbs (32 kg), please refer to our Check-in Pets page.

Booking Restrictions

Hawaiian Airlines will limit the number of kennels carried on any flight in order to ensure the safety and well-being of any animal transported. The following restrictions apply:

  • Pet traveling in cabin are limited to one (1) pet per kennel, and one (1) kennel per passenger
  • Up to two (2) puppies, or two (2) kittens at least 8 weeks, but no more than 6 months, may be carried in one (1) kennel, provided they do not exceed a total weight of 25 lbs
  • Carry on pets are NOT PERMITTED on flights into the State of Hawai'i, to/from New York or to/from International destinations
  • Pets in cabin are restricted due to quarantine restrictions set by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture.

There are no fees for the transportation of service animals, in either the passenger or luggage compartment. Please see our Special Assistance section if traveling with a Service Animal.

Note: Web Check-in is not available for passengers with pets in cabin.

Pet Carrier Acceptance Information

Passengers who carry-on their pets must:

  • Supply their own pet carrier and make all arrangements
  • Assume full responsibility for complying with any applicable laws, customs and government regulation requirements or restrictions of the country, state and territory to which the animal is being transported

Pet Carrier Regulations and Restrictions:

Based on carrier regulations and restrictions, the following apply to pets traveling as carry-on luggage:

  • The pet must be small enough to fit comfortably in the carrier under the seat directly in front of the passenger
  • Pet carrier must be leak-proof and well ventilated
  • The carrier could be a hard sided airline approved kennel OR "Sherpa" carrier, which has mesh lining that helps prevent leakage and looks like a duffle bag
  • Pet carrier must have a reasonable amount of room for the comfort and safety of the animal (must be able to stand up and turn around in kennel), and comply with all U.S. Animal Welfare Act and Department of Agriculture Requirements
  • Your pet must be confined to the pet carrier, and is subject to inspection and approval by airline personnel prior to acceptance
  • All pets must be harmless, inoffensive, odorless and require no attention during transit

Pets that exceed 25 lbs (11kg), but less than 70 lbs (32 kg), must be transported as check-in luggage. For pets over 70 lbs, please refer to our Check-in Pet page.

Note: When traveling with a pet in cabin, the pet carrier will not be counted as part of the standard carry-on baggage allowance, and will always be subject to applicable fees and restrictions.

Carry-on Health Certificate Requirements

To ensure an enjoyable experience, please review the Health Certificate requirements below:

Health certificates are valid for 30 days after original departure date. If your return flight occurs beyond 30 days from the original departure date, you will need to obtain a new health certificate, dated within 10 (Hawaii→North America) / 14 (North America→Hawaii, service animals only) days of return flight.

Note: Health certificates must be signed/issued by a licensed/certified veterinarian.

Health certificate is not required for dogs or cats on Neighbor Island flights.

Hawaii to North America

Original health certificate and a copy is required.  Original for quarantine, and a copy for Hawaiian Airlines. Health certificate must be dated within 10 days of date of departure signed/issued by a licensed/certified veterinarian..
