Children Traveling Alone

Age Restrictions

Domestic Flights (Neighbor Island / North America)
Passengers under 5 years old are not permitted to travel without a companion at least 15 years old
Passengers from 5 to 11 years old traveling without a companion at least 15 years old are considered unaccompanied minors and will be subject to service fees and additional requirements
Passengers 12 years old and above may travel unaccompanied
International Flights
Passengers under 12 years old are not permitted to travel without a companion at least 18 years old
Passengers 12 years old and above may travel unaccompanied
Any passenger under 18 years of age  may require additional documentation, when traveling with only one parent or neither parent.  Please check with your local consulate.

Unaccompanied Minor - Rules and Restrictions


  • Children under 5 years old are not permitted to travel alone
  • Unaccompanied Minors are children traveling alone aged 5-11 years old which are not accompanied on the same flight and in the same compartment by a passenger 15 years of age or over (Domestic), or 18 years of age or over (International).


  • HA will accept up to two (2) children in an immediate family with the same drop-off/pick-up information for a single fee. For each additional child, the fee will be assessed for each child.
    • Within the State of Hawaii: $35
    • Between Hawaii and North America: $100
    • International: Unaccompanied Minors are Not Permitted
  • Fees are to be paid by parent or responsible adult upon check-in


Travel will not be allowed on a Hawaiian Airlines flight departing between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless travel is on flights operating out of Honolulu, Hawaii, which is the only flight of the day.

Connecting Flights

  • Unaccompanied Minors will not be accepted for travel on the last connecting flight of the day to their final destination.
  • The maximum ground connection time for all Unaccompanied Minor passengers will be 2 hours.
    • Exception: If the next scheduled connecting flight exceeds 2 hours, Unaccompanied Minors Service passengers must be booked on the next scheduled flight that same day and will not be allowed on a later flight. If that flight is not available for sale, the passenger will not be accepted for travel on that date and must be booked on another day where these conditions can be met.

Not Permitted

  • Flights to/from international destinations including American Samoa, or which require an overnight stay in order to make a connection
  • Connecting flights to/from another carrier
    • Exception: This does not apply to unaccompanied minors connecting on flights between Hawaiian Airlines and 'Ohana by Hawaiian operated by Empire Airlines.
  • Any codeshare flights

Drop Off/Pick Up Contact Information

  • Children (5-11 years old) must be brought to the airport of departure by a parent or responsible adult and who must complete the required documentation and furnish HA with satisfactory evidence, including name, phone number and address of the parent or responsible adult who will be meeting the child upon deplaning at his/her destination. The parent or guardian must accompany the child to the gate for a departing flight and remain at the gate until the flight has departed, and pick up the child at the designated area at each airport upon arrival. If the parent or responsible adult meeting the child is not the individual identified at departure, the parent or responsible adult who furnished the information at departure must immediately contact HA to provide alternate information via electronic transmission. HA will only release the child to the individual(s) named on the document.

Web Check-in

  • Children travelling as an Unaccompanied Minor will not be allowed to check-in on the web or at a kiosk. The adult and child must check in with an agent at the airport to complete applicable forms and provide payment.

Meet and Assist (MAAS)

Meet and Assist Service is available and applicable for:

  • passengers age 12 and above for transportation between the Continental USA and Hawaii or wholly within the State of Hawaii,
  • qualified individuals with a disability for any route.

In addition to the full adult fare applicable to such passengers, when Meet and Assist service is requested, the applicable Rules and Restrictions above will also apply.
